Johnny started training his voice in Boston under famed instructor Dante' Pavone who also instructed James Taylor and Peter Wolf. He turned professional at age 16. Being one of the youngest front men in the city Johnny achieved huge success singing with local R&B groups like -The Feel- and, Buttercup - as well as the alternative original act - Viper. Johnny also involved himself in some commercial enterprises with extensive studio work as a voice over recording artist for radio and television.

In the late 90's Johnny started a solo career with various back up bands. He continued performing in nightclubs and recruiting the best talent in the area. Soon a powerful band The Johnny Ray Band began to take shape with it's own unique sound and personality. The band was getting hired for several celebrity fundraiser and events annually in addition to an ambitious nightclub schedule. It became apparent that something special was happening and the buzz began.

With his growing popularity offers began to pour in for the band. Clients from Boston were flying the band around the country for high profile corporate events and fundraisers. The always affable and likable Johnny was even offered his own nightclub - The Johnny Ray Lounge - aboard Atlantic Casino Cruise Lines of Gloucester. When he was offered a contract to join the cruise line at their Miami Beach location, Johnny declined the offer because he had his sights set on an even hotter destination, Las Vegas.

The Monte Carlo Resort Hotel and Casino was the first property to embrace the band and soon Johnny was put into the rotation as one of the hotels headliners. Johnny now appears regularly at The Monte Carlo Brew Pub with the whole band and also at Houdini's Lounge featuring his accompanist - Las Vegas fixture, Paul Badia (Former musical director at The Stardust for The Wayne Newton Show)

While traveling with his band Johnny makes Las Vegas his primary residence and plans on making the entertainment capitol his permanent home. Prior to this as leader of The Johnny Ray Band he solidified the bands reputation as "the best band in Boston", (Hank Morse, The Loren and Wally Show WROR, 105.7).

His CD releases, "Promised Land", "Golden Nugget's", and "Vegas Night's" were well received with commercial and critical success. The band has also been the favorite band for the NFL's "Ultimate" Tailgate Parties for all of the New England Patriot home games in Foxboro Massachusetts, as well as, the headline act for five straight seasons aboard Horizons Edge Casino Cruise Lines of Boston earning the title - "The most requested band in New England", (Michael Tumulty, entertainment director - Horizons Edge Casino Cruise Lines).

With all the publicity and success surrounding Johnny he still insists, "We are all regular guys from Boston who got lucky by having a job we really, really like. Boston is a great place to grow up in the music industry and Las Vegas is the perfect place to play when you're all grown up".

After years of perfecting his style as a dynamic bandleader and smooth lounge crooner, Johnny continues to travel and perform nationally. He continues to be one of the most sought after entertainers in the circuit for nightclubs, celebrity fundraisers, and corporate events. In December of 2004 Johnny entertained holiday partygoers at the exclusive Trump property Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach Florida. In attendance was Donald Trump himself, and his reaction to the band? "You're hired Johnny!"
