Pianist Yoko Miwa displays unpretentious melodies, elegant phrasing, and the lyrical sensibility of a jazz poet on Fadeless Flower, her second trio release. A native of Kobe, Japan, Miwa began playing classical piano at age 4. She first studied jazz under Makoto Ozone’s father before earning a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she later became a faculty member.

The brass band tradition dates back to the Napoleonic days of Louisiana. An abundance of brass instruments in New Orleans during the years of the French occupation allowed slaves to bury their dead with musical accompaniment. This was the root of marching band music.
